After you book a vacation, one thing that you might want to consider is travel insurance. However, you might be asking yourself some questions like, ‘Do I need it? Is it worth it?’ Whether it’s for your trip, your luggage, or your health, travel insurance is a smart way to prepare for any mishaps or unforeseen events that might occur while traveling. Here’s everything you need to know about travel insurance, so you can make the most informed decision possible when planning your vacation.

    Do You Need Travel Insurance?

There are many reasons to buy travel insurance, but before you do, keep these things in mind. Before you purchase anything, check to see what your current insurance plan might cover. Some health insurance plans cover medical emergencies overseas, some do not. Make sure you know the ins and outs of your current policies before making any decisions.

When considering purchasing travel insurance, think about what kind of trip are you taking. Are you going on an exotic international vacation with multiple destinations, flights, etc.? If so, you’ll probably want to think about getting travel insurance. If you’ve purchased expensive excursions or flights that are nonrefundable, it might also be a smart idea to purchase travel insurance. If you would be losing significant amounts of money if an illness or disaster ruined your travel plans, it would be wise to consider it.

The bottom line is, it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Plus, it can’t hurt to provide extra protection for you and your family should any complications arise. Travel insurance is there to give you peace of mind, which is invaluable when traveling.

Situations Where Travel Insurance Can Protect You

    • In case you need to cancel your trip
    • Your flight has been cancelled
    • Your passport and wallet are stolen
    • You’re involved in an accident
    • You need emergency medical attention
    • Lost luggage
    • Your travel company files bankruptcy
    • Plus, more!

*Coverage varies by each travel insurance policy.

    Popular Types of Travel Insurance

     Trip Cancellation Insurance

    • This is one of the bigger ones, and for good reason. If you’re spending a large sum of money on a trip, you want to make sure you can recover your expenses should anything happen. This coverage is typically meant for illness, injury, or death by the insured.

    Medical Insurance

    • The most common type of medical insurance is emergency medical evaluation. Outside the U.S., many health insurance plans won’t cover you, especially if you’re on a foreign vessel. Don’t assume that you’re covered by your regular policy. Also, in most cases you will be asked to pay up front and your insurance company will reimburse you afterwards.

    Baggage Insurance

    • Many trip cancellation plans also cover baggage, but be sure to double check. A separate baggage plan is also a good choice.

    Travel Document Protection

    • If you lose your passport or other documents, this will help you replace it.

Ultimately, travel insurance is never a bad idea. Accidents happen, and it’s always better to be prepared and on the safe side, especially when you’re in a foreign country. Travel insurance allows you to focus on the important things, like having fun and making memories, without worrying about what could go wrong.
