Best U.S. Cruise Destinations
Although it’s exciting to travel to far-off destinations, there are plenty of incredible places to visit that are in the United States! We’ve hand-picked 4 U.S. cities that rival anywhere else in the world. The stunning beauty of Alaska will blow you away, Maine is as quaint of a seaside town as you will find, Charleston will win you over with its Southern charm, and Key West will lure you in with its eclectic vibe and Key Lime Pie. There are plenty of different cruise options to get you to each of these spots—read on to find out more about these U.S. cities and how to get there!
1. Ketchikan, Alaska
Known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the World’, this city is home to 8,000 people (and even more salmon) and is one of Alaska’s true gems. First, the landscape is truly breathtaking. The snowcapped mountains create a dramatic backdrop and offer tons of different hiking opportunities. Aside from hiking, kayaking, fishing, and flightseeing are other great ways to explore the surrounding landscape. In town, be sure to visit Creek Street for shopping and the Totem Heritage Center to learn about the native history of the area. Save up your appetite for some of the best salmon and fish you’ll ever eat!
Avoya Insider Tip: Ketchikan is located in a temperate rainforest and gets over 300 days of rain per year, which is what makes it so beautiful! Be sure and pack rain gear so you’re prepared for any wet weather.
2. Portland, Maine
Portland is a quiet seaside town that is full of history and an up and coming food scene! Any trip to Portland should start with a stroll to the downtown area of Old Port. It’s the true heart of the city and is where all the best restaurants and shops are located. Make sure to stop for a lobster roll and oysters—and don’t forget check out the numerous breweries for a pint! There are many historical sights to see such as the famous Victoria Mansion and the U.S. Custom House. If you’re looking for nature, there are numerous East Coast-style beaches (with picturesque lighthouses) and day-hikes in the area to explore!
3. Charleston, South Carolina
It doesn’t get more charming than Charleston! With its historical cobblestoned streets, rainbow colored houses, and delicious Southern cuisine, there’s a lot to love in this tiny town. Start at King Street for some shopping in the downtown area and make your way to the harbor for some scenic views of the water. Then, go and explore the adorable houses and 18th century architecture of the tree lined neighborhoods. End your time in Charleston with a craft cocktail at one of the many rooftop bars!
Avoya Insider Tip: To cool off from the Southern heat and escape the city, try heading to the beach at nearby Sullivan’s Island for a relaxing day by the sea!
4. Key West, Florida
Key West is a laid-back, quirky beach town that is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical climate, and historical treasures. Fun fact: Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, and John J. Audubon spent much of their time there. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is well worth a visit, as this was the iconic spot where he wrote many of his most famous works. Be sure and stop by the Southernmost Point—Key West is the Southernmost city in the continental U.S.—and check it off your list. Enjoy a slice of authentic Key Lime Pie as you watch the sunset at famous (and entertaining) Mallory Square!
All four of these U.S. destinations deserve a spot on your bucket list. Even though they don’t require a ton of travel time, you’ll still feel like you’re in a far-away place! Plus, they can all be easily accessed via these fantastic cruise lines:
